Class B Driving Licence: Theory Test – 30 Questions, Error Points, Languages, Costs

Every test contains questions from the basic material (Grundstoff), which applies to all classes, and the additional material (Zusatzstoff) of the respective class. For first acquisition of class B there are 30 questions: 20 basic material and 10 additional material with a total of 110 points (FeV Anlage 7 Nr. 1.2.2). The basic material is divided into hazard theory (8 questions), behaviour in road traffic (6), right of way and priority (3), traffic signs (2) and environmental protection (1). Anyone who already holds a driving licence and is extending it gets 20 questions with 72 points and may have 6 error points.

The questions are multiple-choice tasks with up to three answers, at least one of which is correct, or free-text tasks with a number. A question counts as wrong as soon as a correct answer is missing or an incorrect one is ticked – there are no partial points. Since 1 April 2025 there are additionally picture-selection tasks with three traffic sign images.

Each question is weighted with 2 to 5 points depending on its importance for road safety; the weighting is shown in the catalogue for each question. The test is failed if more than 10 error points accumulate or two questions weighted 5 are answered incorrectly (FeV Anlage 7 Nr. 1.2.3). A failed test is repeated in full. Neither the FeV nor the Prüfungsrichtlinie sets a time limit; films in video questions may be viewed up to five times, but no longer once the question has been opened.

The test is to be taken in German, but can also be held in twelve foreign languages: English, French, Greek, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Croatian, Spanish, Turkish and Modern Standard Arabic (FeV Anlage 7 Nr. 1.3); Kurmanji and Ukrainian will be added on 1 April 2027. Persian is not among them – Persian speakers take the test in German or in one of the languages listed. In addition, there is audio support in German via headphones.

The questions are created by the working group “Theoretical driving licence test and task development” of the TÜV | DEKRA arge tp 21 in Dresden; the Federal Ministry of Transport announces changes twice a year (1 April, 1 October) in the Verkehrsblatt (federal transport gazette). For class B, around 1,170 questions have been published since 1 April 2025, including about 228 “parent questions” (Mutterfragen), whose variants appear in the test but are not published. The high-resolution images, films and the structured database are protected by copyright and are supplied by arge tp 21 only to licensees.

Without a licence, ScheinFit does not reproduce any official test questions. Included today are:

• the traffic sign trainer with 181 traffic signs from the StVO (Anlagen 1–4) – official works whose images are provided free of charge by the Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen (Federal Highway Research Institute);
• the test structure (30 questions, 20 + 10, 2–5 points, 10 error points) and the topic tree of the basic and additional material;
• translations and explanations in Persian, English, Arabic and Turkish.

The official questions with images and videos will follow as soon as the licence from TÜV | DEKRA arge tp 21 has been granted; the exam simulation with error points is already prepared for this.

The theory test costs €24.99 gross at the technical testing centres (fee schedule: €11.10 test + €9.90 PC test, plus VAT). Registration is handled by the driving school; in Germany, the driving school's theory lessons (12 double lessons of basic material + 2 double lessons of additional material for class B) must be completed before the driving school registers you for the test.
